Most popular Video Games: The Hits never get old!!!

The history of video games popularity began in the early seventies with the first commercial arcade game called Computer Space. It was followed by “Pong” (my first introduction to video games).

The first generation of home video game consoles was the Magnavox Odyssey.

Home video games started to become popular in Japan around 1983. That year, several competing companies, such as Nintendo, Sega Enterprises, and Bandai Co., came out with new game consoles

“Classic, I still play this one”

I am currently playing Galaga, a spaceship shooting game. It was released in 1979 by Namco. I still love it.

During the late 1990s and early 2000s, PlayStation by Sony and Xbox by Microsoft joined Nintendo as the three dominant consoles in the video gaming market.

These three major consoles are still going strong and are very popular today. As with each new generation, the technology gets more advanced and the video games get better and have more variety.

Our choices in video games are as diverse as the people who play them. Sometimes I can connect to people simply by talking about what kind of video games they play.

We talk about our favorite games and what are the most popular video games. Some video game titles have been around for decades.

I want to look at the most popular video games of all time.

To determine the most popular video games of all time, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed unit sales data for over 100,000 video games. This research was provided by the research firm VGChartz.

35 of the 50 most popular games appeared after 2005, mostly due to the advancement in technology. However, some classics are still fun to play.

This link lists several of the video game hits through the years.

Tetris
       “Fun and addictive”

Let’s begin going through some of the “Hits of the video game world, These are in no certain order.

1. Tetris: It is a tile-matching puzzle game. It was released in 1989 by Nintendo. It has sold over 35,840,000 copies. Tetris combines continuous fun with mental stimulation for any age, young or old.

Women and older adults seem to like this game very much. It is easy and hard to play, a winning combination.

2. Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga: A Lego-themed action-adventure video game. It was released in 2007 by Lucas Arts. It has sold over 15,300,000 copies. Legos and Stars Wars have become a very successful blending of building blocks and a very popular movie franchise.

Lego-Star-Wars
                   “Young Jedi”

Legos and Star Wars, a win-win combination. These games are a lot of fun for all the members of the family.

Other Lego games include superheroes in the storyline like “Batman”, the Dark Knight. I love it.

May the Force be with you.

3. Gran Turismo 3 A-spec: As expected, this is a car racing game. It was released in 2001 by Sony Computer Entertainment. It sold about 14,980,000 copies.

Gran-Turismo
                “A need for speed”

This racing game is considered one of the greatest video games of all-time. It is a blast to play and a must have for people who have a heavy-foot for the gas pedal.

This is one of the first racing game I really got into. I am not usually a fan of racing games. I crash a lot, but Gran Turismo 3 A-spec was and still is a lot of fun.

One of the coolest features of a racing game is when you crash, you don’t die. Hit restart and you are back in the driver’s seat.

Kiss
                         “Rock’n’Roll”

4. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock: I no longer play a pretend air-guitar using a stick cranking out guitar licks of “Freebird” by Lynyrd Skynyrd. I can be my own ROCK GOD” (Move over Gene Simmons).

This game was released in 2007 by RedOctane. It sold over 16,360,000 copies.

Using a video game controller to mimic playing the guitar was a stroke of genius for us want-a-be “Rockstars”.

We can now “Rise up, Gather around, Rock this place to the Ground”.

Get a few people together to form the next band of “Rock Legends”.

5. Battlefield 3: It is a first-person shooter video game. It was released in 2011 by Electronic Arts and sold over 17,320,000 copies.

battlefield-3
“War is hell, even in a video game”

This game is the eleventh in the Battlefield franchise and still going strong whether set in WWI or WWII or the future.

I know a lot of people don’t care about war games, they can be too bloody and violent. I agree. Parents really have to be careful about letting young play these types of games.

I do enjoy playing them. I hope that doesn’t make me a bad person.

6. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim: This is an action role-playing video game. It was released in 2011 by Bethesada. It has sold over 19,320,000 copies.

Elder Scrolls skyrim
                          “A world of high-adventure”

It has dragons and the world is immense. This is a must-have game for all want-a-be warriors.

The landscape is breathtaking.

The online version of “Elder Scrolls Online” had a “Free Weekend”. 10 million people joined in. This is simply amazing. If we can get 10 million people together to play a video game, then maybe, we can get them together to change the world, not just the virtual world, but the real world.

Please check out this related link. https://www.pcmag.com/news/357653/the-elder-scrolls-online-celebrates-10m-players-with-free-we

7. Kinect Adventures: This one is a sports video game. It was released in 2010 by Microsoft and sold over 22,090,000 copies.

It is a collection of adventure and sports games.

        “Get off the couch”

The game utilizes the Kinect motion camera. You don’t set in a recliner. You must get up and move to play this game.

Please, take my word on this, it is hard to play, especially for old grandpas like myself. You work up a sweat, but it is fun.

No time for the gym? This game is your answer.

8. Nintendogs: A pet simulation video game. It was released in 2005 by Nintendo. Sales topped 24,680,000 copies.

“The real thing. He’s so cute”

These game sales surprised me, but I need to remember, I didn’t grow up in this techno age we now live in.

I can see the advantages, no poop, no messes, no pet food, no vet bills, and most of all, not having to put the family pet to sleep one day.

For me and please remember this. I love playing video games. But relationships with people and even our pets are more important than anything the virtual world has to offer.

If I am going to have a pet, I want the real thing, a creature of God.

I want something that licks my face, that I can pet, or listen to the sweet voice of a purring kitty, but that’s just me.

9. Duckhunt: This a light shooter video game where you hunt. It was released in 1985 by Nintendo. It sold over 28,310,000 copies. It is about the kind of hunting you did with your friends, your girlfriend or boyfriend, your sister or brother, your daughter or son, your mom or dad, your grandma or grandpa, or sometimes, just by yourself.

  “Hunting without killing, GOOD”

Not hard to play. It does help with hand to eye coordination. Wait, let me get this straight (Remember, I am an old guy). A video game can help make me be a better hunter in real life.

Hunters of the world, this is a given, “Get this game!”.

For the people in the world who say, “Hunting is bad”. If you kill to just kill for a trophy, then you are right.

But, if it is for food. We have no right to judge. Please remember, we are talking about a video game.

10. “VERY POPULAR WITH THE LADIES” Minecraft: It was released 2013 by Microsoft Game Studios. It sold over 28,730,000 copies. Very popular with everybody.

“This ain’t working, money for nothing”

This is what the industry calls an Open world, free roam”, or (more loosely) sandbox are terms for video games where a player can move freely through a virtual world and is given considerable freedom regarding how and when to approach objectives, as opposed to other video games that have a more linear structure to their gameplay.

Very addictive, but in a good way. Something you can play with your wife or girlfriend.

This game is a win-win.

11. Fifa 15 and 17: The Fifa 15 was released in 2015 and Eifa 17 was released 2016 created by Electronic Arts. The combined totals of sales for these two games topped over 30,590,000.

         “Good game, fun to play”

That is huge. Soccer/Association Football is the most popular sports in the world and we are not just talking about American football. Soccer reigns in the rest of the world.

Between soccer and football, there are over 3.5 billion fans worldwide.

No wonder soccer video games are so popular. An added benefit is you can play with other players from around the world.

They are fun to play and a change of pace from playing “Madden Football’.

Give it a chance.

brain
              “Let the sparks fly”

12. Brain Age 1 and 2: Released in 2006 and 2007 by Nintendo. Gross sales for the two combined was 35,450,000.

These games will help train your brain. This is not mindless setting in the chair and hitting buttons randomly trying to hit the right combination.

You must think to play these games. I need these types of games. I am not into doing a crossword puzzle. I’m not a card player, checker player, or a chess player. I’m a video game player, call me what I am, a “Gamer”. Not a good one, but that doesn’t matter, RIGHT.

13. Grand Theft Auto series: Created by Rockstar Games.

  • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Released in 2002.
  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Released in 2004.

    grand-theft-auto
        “Playing the gangster is fun”

  • Grand Theft Auto IV: Released in 2008.
  • Grand Theft Auto V: Released in 2013.

These four games sales have reached 122,560,000. Some of these popular games like Grand Theft Auto are cash cows for companies.

Oh yeah, they are fun to play. They can be a little rough, so be careful with younger kids.

I want to be honest about these types of games. I would never let a young kid play these games. They are raw and can be very nasty. Let’s be truthful here.

These games do have an appeal, I know they do with me. It reminds me of “Gangster” movies like “The Godfather” or “Goodfellas”. I love these movies. To be honest, I love playing the anti-heroes in these types of games like “Grand Theft Auto” or “Watchdogs”.

14. Wii Fit/Sports: Created by Nintendo.

This is another series of games where you must get up from the couch. You must move and get involved physically. There is a motion camera with this game like the Kinect games for Xbox.

  • Wii Sports: Released in 2006.

                         “This game wore me out”

  • Wii Play: Released in 2007.
  • Wii Fit: Released in 2008.
  • Wii Fit Plus: Released in 2009.
  • Wii Sports Resort: Released in 2009.

Total sales for this series is 188,980,000. WOW!

For all the critics, who say video gamers set on the buts all day, need to check these games out. It will seem like gym class.

15. The Pokémon Franchise: Created by Nintendo.

  • Pokémon Red/Green/ Blue: Released in 1998.

                       “Ain’t the little guy cute”

  • Pokémon Yellow: Released in 1999.
  • Pokémon Gold/Silver: Released in 2000.
  • Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire: Released in 2003.
  • Pokémon Diamond/Pearl: Released in 2007.
  • Pokémon Black/White: Released in 2011.
  • Pokémon X/Y: Released in 2013.
  • Pokémon Sun/Moon: Released in 2016.

Copies sold over the years have reached 149,570,000. The title comes from Japan which was originally called Pocket Monsters.

There are 9.5 million active users per day. We are talking about billions of players worldwide.

There are seventeen movies based on this game. It is a major phenomenon.

“Almost 40 years, the brothers are still kicking”

16. Mario Brothers Family: Created by Nintendo.

  • Super Mario Brothers: Released in 1985.
  • Super Mario Land: Released in 1989.
  • Super Mario Brothers 3: Released in 1990.
  • Super Mario World: Released in 1991.
  • Mario Kart DS: Released in 2005.
  • New Super Mario Brothers DS: Released in 2006.
  • Mario Kart Wii: Released in 2008.
  • New Super Mario Brothers WII: Released in 2009.
  • Mario Kart 7: Released in 2011.

Total sales: 233,530,000. A major hit from the get-go. I believe every video gamer (serious or casual) has played some form of Mario brothers in their life.

These are always fun to play, even the older versions. Kids and adults love this game.

An oldie but a goody. Also, Mario is almost as old as me.

“We still love army gals and guys”

17. Call of Duty Juggernaut: Created by Activision.

  • Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare: Released in 2007.
  • Call of Duty: World at War: Released in 2008.
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2: Released in2009.
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops: Released in 2010.
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3: Released in 2011.
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 2: Released in 2012.
  • Call of Duty: Ghosts: Released in 2013.
  • Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare: Released in 2014.
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 3: Released in 2015.
  • Call of Duty: WWII: Released in 2017.

These war machine sales have totaled over 232,350,000.

Now, ladies, I will admit, most of these sales have probably come from guys. The games are about war, guns, battles, tanks, planes, and you know, guy stuff.

After a hard day at work, sometimes the best way to unwind is to just blow up some stuff. Only in the games though, no blowing up with your kids and especially, your wife. That’s a battle you can’t win guys. Trust me on that one.

Just by the sheer numbers of these most popular video games sales is proof, video gaming is a big part of our entertainment world.

Please check out this post about how video games are created. https://gamingwithgrandpa.com/how-video-games-are-created-it-must-be-magic#more-946

I barely skimmed the surface of other popular video games.

Other favorite video game franchises include:

  • Assassin’s Creed games: (I love these games, I have almost all of them).
  • World of Warcraft: join thousands of mighty heroes in an online world of myth, magic, and limitless adventure.

                 “Warriors of the world unite”

  • Superhero games like Batman, Superman, and Spider-man.
  • Fighting games: Tekken, Mortal Kombat, or Street Fighter.
  • Sporting Games: Madden Football, hockey, baseball, and basketball.
  • Racing and Flying games: Forza Motorsport or soar to the skies with Ace Combat.

I hope this post has been informative and helpful. It is amazing how video games have developed over the years. And they get better and better as technology grows. If you have any comments, please reply below or email me at johnny@gamingwithgrandpa.com

  1. OMG these brought back so much memories! Tetris! Mario Brothers! You have brought me back to my childhood days!
And I love the name of your website!

  2. My son and daughter play World of Tanks (free) and they play online with my father-in-law. They use their headsets and can talk to grandpa the whole time (for free – no Long Distance charges).

    • Hi Dave, thank you so much for your comment. It means a lot to me. I play World of Tanks also. I am not any good at it, but that really doesn’t matter. I enjoy playing it. I love your story of your kids playing a video game to connect to their grandpa Go Kids and you too, grandpa.
i am so thankful this website prompted you to share a little piece of your life.
      God bless you Dave.

  3. Ahhh, so much memories… I remember my first days playing video games. My father bought me a SEGA concole and be both played games like Sonic, Street Fighter, Warsong, Phantasy Star, Mario, Jurassic Park and so on and so forth. Had other concoles later, but since personal computer took over the things, games became more and more bigger and unique.
My first PC games were e-racer, Prince of Persia, Diablo 2, Suffering, Half-Life and then I found World of Warcraft, which I played for over 10 years. The game is trully something special and even now I wouldn’t mind to play it.
I’ve played about 90% of the games you’ve mentioned, and I recommend everyone to try them. Thank you for a great post, Johnny. You brought so much memories…
    All the best,
    Dan

  4. I have some incredible memories of playing many of these games when I was a young kid, arguing with my brother over who got to play next in the single player games, or me accusing him of cheating in the two player games haha You are so right though, the hits never get old. Especially Tetris. No one could ever get bored of Tetris!

    • Hi Josie,

Thanks for taking the time to comment. I still like playing the oldies, like “Galaga”. I have this game loaded on my Xbox. It is a lot of fun. Yes, Tetris is a classic.

I glad this post brought back some fond memories. Who won most of the arguments between your brother and you? Also, what kind of games did ya’ll play.

      I appreciate you thoughts.

      johnny, the Grey Wolf.

  5. That was AWESOME! I played a lot of the games from the list and it was always a real blast. My first video game was TANKS, in 1995-6 and I was hooked ever since. Thanks a lot for the list. It provided some fond memories and the amount of sold units. Thank you for the research!

    • How Sllky Soso,

I am glad you enjoyed the post. Thanks for your thoughts. I have the game called “World of Tanks”. It is a very fun game driving those awesome machines.

This was a fun post to do research on, I learned a lot myself.

Glad it brought back good memories.

      Thanks for your time,

      johnny, the Grey Wolf.

  6. This was a real walk down memory lane for me, as I remember playing some of these games growing up.

I remember Tetris and Mario Brothers the best and we used to spend hours fighting over the computer to play that one. I was surprised to learn that the Pokemon’s were around as early as 1999, as I had never heard of them until recently. It’s also amazing that there are 17 movies based on them. Can’t say I have heard of more than three.

The other game I remember playing a lot of growing up was Pac Man – this one was very popular with my school friends.

    • Hi Michel,

How are you doing? Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Tetris, Mario Brothers, and Pac Man are classics. They are still fun today. Retro games such as these are very popular. You can Google “Retro Video Games” to see a list of other older games.

I was surprised at the popularity of Pokemon. This thing is huge. I haven’t played any of these games, but kids love it.

I glad this post brought back some fond memories. Do you play any games now?

      I appreciate your thoughts, Michel.

johnny, the Grey Wolf, watcher of the woods.

  7. Such nostalgia! I remember my mom was the one that got me into gaming. It all started with Tetris and Super Mario Bros 1 for the NES. I feel so old yet relieved to plays one of the best founding games of our time, Being a 90’s kids, I am awe-struck with such valuable time. Some of these titles are one of the biggest video franchise in the world and every gamer would recognize any of these. I love this article. I am definitively coming back for this. Thank you for sharing and letting me relive it.

    • Hi Andy,

I am glad you stopped by. That is cool your mom got you involved with gaming. You don’t hear that a lot. Good for her and you. I know you will cherish those moments forever.

It seems a lot of people starting gaming with hits like Tetris and Mario Brothers. Almost 40 years, we have had classics like these two. There are many others. I have Galaga download on my Xbox.

I have you played some of the modern titles? There are some good ones. The graphics are amazing. I’m playing Horizon: Zero Dawn. You get to fight machines that look like dinosaurs, very fun.

I am glad you enjoyed this post. I wanted it to be back fond memories for readers. I hope I have achieved that.

      You take care, Andy.

johnny, the Grey Wolf, watcher of the woods.

  8. Hi there,

Even I have heard of some of these, minecraft, pokemon, I’m giving my age away now. They all sound like great games, no wonder they are some of the most popular and enduring. You must notice in new games how much technology has improved in terms of visuals, speed, graphics etc. I can only compare it to old disney cartoons and modern animation films. So much technology and computer science used in games. I find it all quite interesting from that perspective.

    Louise

    • Hi Louise,

It is always good to hear from you. Thanks for your thoughts and comments.

I agree the new games are amazing. Their graphics and story lines are so good today. Sometimes it feels like you are playing inside a movie. Some of the images in games are so realistic looking.

So much has changed. You mention cartoons. The animation is so much different today. But I still love watching the old cartoons like “Looney Tunes”. Nobody beats Bugs Bunny. One of my favorite characters is Fog Horned Leg Horn. The big rooster with the southern twang. He talks just like I do, I am from the south also.

Louise, I guess we are giving away our ages. That’s okay. I wish you the best. Thanks for stopping by.

johnny, the Grey Wolf, watcher of the woods.

  9. The hits never get old! I agree with you totally on this. So many memories here, I can’t even say the one I enjoyed most. I always love playing soccer games and I’ve been playing FIFA since 2005 so, I played the 2016 and 2017 versions too. Also, I played the Call of Duty Juggernaut… OMG! That almost spoilt my keyboard😃. Very nice remembering the hits. Wow! Thanks for this post, I really enjoyed it

    • Hi RoDarrick,

It is true the good ones never get old. I still play “Galaga” on my Xbox. I am glad this post brought back some fond memories. It was a pleasure do the research for this article. It was fun going down memory lane for me as well.

The whole Call of Duty series is still fun to play. I love how the controller set up is easy to play. I am not good at games where I have to hit certain combination.

I really appreciate you taking the time to comment, RoDarrick.

johnny, the Grey Wolf, watcher of the woods.

  10. I agree that most the video games above are top selling games and probably will be forever known in the gaming community. Tetris is the most-selling video games all over the world. I personally like Pokemon games franchise, although I wasn’t able to play the latest franchise (Sun and Moon) due to time constraint, and even the next main title (Sword and Shield) due to not having the platform (Switch). Do you have any favorite recent game title among the list above?

    • Hi Alblue,

Thanks for your comments. I haven’t played Tetris in a long time. I haven’t play any of the Pokemon games. As far as the oldies, I still play “Galaga”. I have it downloaded to my Xbox. Some current titles I am playing are “Horizon: Zero dawn” and “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare”. I recently ordered ‘Spider-man”. I am looking forward to playing “Spidy”.

There are so many choices today, but the classics are still a lot of fun. You mentioned the Pokemon series. What other games do you enjoy playing?

I really appreciate you taking the time to reply, Alblue.

johnny, the Grey Wolf, watcher of the woods.

  11. Wonderful article. Remind me of my good old days. Though I’ve not heard most of them, but get to learn about them now. I’m glad that I get to read this post.

you’ve covered every single aspect of each game very thoroughly. I’ll surely share this article with my neighbors and younger brother.

Thanks for sharing this awesome post. I appreciate your interest.

    • Hi akshaysaxena.

I hope your neighbors and brother enjoy the post. This article was a lot of fun to do. It brought back a lot memories of my gaming journey. I am 62 years old. I never thought I would be creating a website about video games. You never know.

Do you still play video games? If you do, what kind of games do you like playing?

I just ordered the new “Spider-Man” game. Looking forward to being the superhero.

      Thanks for your comments, akshaysaxena.

johnny, the Grey Wolf, watcher of the woods.

  12. Hi Johnny

So many classic games to play, which brings back so many memories for me. I don’t care how old you are these games are interesting and will keep your on your toes. I also think that playing video games improve your motor skills and also can improve your memory.  You don’t want to play this game for too long as they can become addictive.

Thank you for the trip down memory lane.

    Antonio

    • Hi Antonio,

Thank you for your thoughts and comments. Even these old classics are still a lot of fun to play. I still play “Galaga” on my Xbox system. I just load it up and away I go.

I really enjoy playing games that makes me think or figure out puzzles.

I agree is easy to get hooked on certain games. A person can spend a lot of time playing the hours away. We have to be careful about that.

Are you playing any games currently? If so what are you playing? I have been playing “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare”. I just ordered the new “Spider-man” game for my PlayStation 4.

      Thanks for stopping by, Antonio.

johnny, the Grey Wolf, watcher of woods.

  13. Hi, Johnny

I’m really glad to read your amazing entertainment article. I’ve read your article very well. I really appreciate your article. This is a great list. I need to bookmark this article. I like playing games very much. Among the games you mentioned, I have played the most FIFA 2017 games. I also played two more games mentioned here as “Grand Theft Auto series, Call of Duty”. Call of Duty is also a popular game.

Thank you very much for sharing the top games.

    • Hi Mehedi,

How are you doing? Thank you for taking the time to reply to this post.

I haven’t played the FIFA games. But I have played “Grand Theft Auto” and “Call of Duty”. I really enjoyed “Grand Theft Auto V”. It is fun playing the gangster. I am looking forward to the next game in this series.

I going to order the new “Spider-Man” game for the PlayStation 4 system. I get to be a superhero.

      I appreciate your thoughts, Mehedi.

johnny, the Grey Wolf, watcher of the woods.

  14. Hello. I remember playing Gran Turismo on Playstation a lot. The game i was most obsessed up until like 20 years of age was Pokemon. I played Pokemon from the age of the fat GameBoy(didn’t have the fat one but i had the Pocket till the DSi).

I got a Nintendo 64 Console just to play Pokemon Stadium. Well my favorite Pokemon was and is (Lugia). And the movie the Power of One (2000) was the best for me.

On the Playstation i played a lot of Gran Turismo. I even got a steering wheel and pedals. I played Crash Team Racing a lot really like this game. I thought i was good but that was until i saw a video with a Japanese guy that has discovered all hidden passageways (“bugged” or real).

Well on the PC i played quite a lot of GTA Vice City and San Andreas. Then that I “discovered” MMO games i started playing them.

Lineage 2 was the game that i played mostly on the PC. Endless hours farming (for levels and for crafting items).

But now i play League of Legends because the MMO Games have a pay to win factor. Not worth for me anymore.

I’m still not good at LoL been playing for almost 2 years still at Silver IV.

    • Hi George,

      Thanks for stopping by.

Yeah, I played “Gran Turismo” a lot when I first started gaming. I think that was my very first racing game. Another game I love is “Ace Combat”. It is so cool to play a video game that simulates flying a fighter jet. I still have a PlayStation 2 and all the “Ace Combat” games. I haven’t gotten the latest one yet “Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown”. I am waiting for the price to come down. I don’t like paying fifty to sixty bucks for a video game. I have plenty of other games I can play.

I love playing the gangster role in the “Grand Theft Auto” series. I had a blast playing “Grand Theft Auto V”. It made me feel like I was in the movie “Goodfellas”.

I usually don’t play video games on my computer. I do most of my playing on the big screen TV with speakers. I love that theater effect with the big images and big sound. I like playing characters with a head the size of a basketball on the screen.

I do like the massive worlds games like “Skyrim” or “Assassin’s Creed”. I can play these games for months. I was playing “Horizon: Zero Dawn”. Beautiful game. My wife, Cindy, will set and watch me play this game. The graphics are amazing and it has a good storyline. Plus, you get to kill machines that look like dinosaurs.

George, I’m not very good at playing my games either. It takes me months to complete a game, but I do get my money’s worth. Most importantly, I have fun, sounds like you do too. Game on brother.

I appreciate your thoughts. Stop by anytime.
